Excel 2000 Error 1004

Here's a curious one. I have a procedure that makes non contiguous
selections.
Then I want to Selection.Delete Shift:=xlDown.

When I try I get error 1004.

If I do Selection.Delete Shift:=xlUp.... I works!!

Any idea what's happening?
