I have an old Acer laptop that also works fine on 10.04 but won't work
with the latest Ubuntu. Even tried upgrading from 10.04 ( after doing
all the necessary updates ) and no-go :-(

Looking like older hardware is going to struggle with anything after
10.04 !!

Try Unetbootin. It is multi-platform and I get better results with it than
with SDC.

I have an older one now running on Xubuntu 12.04. You might try that
it has all the basic 12.04 Ubuntu but works on older equipment. Also
Lubuntu 12.04 can be tried too, it will work on older equipment too.

Using an old Medion Laptop from AD2003 ,with P4-2.4GHz CPU and just 512MB
RAM, I recently upgraded Lubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 . Running well ,be it
somewhat slower than 10.04

Ubuntu 12.04 won´t run, having a more heavy desktop.

Lubuntu 12.04 ,supported up to April 2017 (I hope) will probably be the
last Linux distro to be used on this hardware , meaning a possible life
span of 14 yrs ............not bad for a medium priced laptop (donated
to me in 2006) .
