boot up/login problems

Date: Dec 27    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 295

I just loaded Ubuntu 8.04 beta today. I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux in
fact this is my first experience. I'm just so frustrated with windows
upgrades and other programs on my machine bogging it down that jumped
from the windows bridge to the Ubuntu/Linux bridge so to speak...

I'm running it on an older machine a Compaq sr1710nx with 256mb of
memory. ADM Sempron processor...

anyway installed Ubuntu and i can only log in using the Genome safe
mode. Any ideas on how to get a normal boot and log in?
