Ubuntinites?

Actually I prefer the term Ubie for Ubuntinite. Therefore we who are new
(since March!) can call ourselves Ubie Noobies.

Ubie Noobies is cool, but as they grow and mature the can unite!
Hence, Ubuntinites Unite! Just have fun with it.

yeah i still consider myself a noob but i dont think im nearly as bad as i used
to be. like yesterday i temp installed (very temporary lol it only lasted a
matter of hours) mandrake 10.0 i thought eh my linux knowlage has grown since
then so ill give it a fair shot. now i know why it is no longer supported. not
only does mandrake speak another language (try running apt-get anything) but the
killer in the back was, it only has the included CDs as its repositories. lol
how limited is that?
while other distros are still wlcome to chalange, i wont be goign after them
quite as much as ive pretty much set my ground with the current distro. i
wouldnt mind one day trying out fedora core 5 maybe on another machine and i
know it too speaks another language rpm -i package name.

Back in March I had downloaded a live Ubuntu disk and when a friend came
over for dinner I installed it on my laptop and we were both blown away.
It immediately grabbed onto my wireless network and we both decided to
continue further. We're both still using Linux although he installed
Fedora. I think he's had a harder time than I've had with Ubuntu
although he's much more computer-brained than I am. With me it's been a
hobby, but he was a tech for IBM and the guru for a local restaurant
chain. But he actually does other things, such as mow the lawn and
practice his clarinet. It's been steep for me and I've actually
expressed admiration for the ease that MS software installs and operates
in comparison to some of the operations that have taken hours getting
certain things to work in Ubuntu. HOWEVER, except for certain programs
that I simply have to use in MS (our church software for instance) I'll
never, never, never give up Linux and Ubuntu, especially. One problem
I'm having right now is trying to compile Stellarium .8.0.1 (I easily
installed an older version via Synaptic, though) and when it gets to the
'make' command it just won't work. The message I get is that there's no
makefile, but there is one. Trying to Google a solution leads to more
confusion and blind alleys. I've compiled other programs so I know make
does work. Must be something with Stellarium. Incidentally, if you're at
all interested in astronomy, take a look at that program. It'll knock
your socks off.

You know there's another planetarium program that comes with edubuntu-
KStars . I haven't seen the one you mentioned.

I know what you mean tho about the linux--I downloaded my first distro
about a month ago. I'm on my 3rd so far-I'm hooked! Linux may be a bit
weird after windows, but I would gladly convert completely-if my Vaio
didn't run so darn good the way Sony tweaked it with XP (its about 3
times faster than my parents Dell with the same hardware).

Are getting this error after you input ./configure
*** The sdl-config script installed by SDL could not be found
*** If SDL was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the SDL_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to sdl-config.

I just downloaded Stellarium in a .deb file and it installed fine,
works great..

Answer #7    Answered On: Dec 06

Where did you get the Deb file for the Stellarium .8.0.1?

Answer #8    Answered On: Dec 06

I got it right here!!
ftp.gva.es/.../?C=S;O=A

Answer #9    Answered On: Dec 06

So is it lots better than Kstars? That didn't seem terribly impressive
to me (but I didn't look much).

Answer #10    Answered On: Dec 06

I've wondered about Celestia too. But Stellarium seems to have it all so
why look further, I tell myself. Glad for that deb file.

Answer #11    Answered On: Dec 06

I have Celestia on XP. Its very pretty, but I didn't find much use for
it-but I only gave it about 15 min. When I couldn't figure out how to
make use of it in my current homeschool plans, I just left it sitting
there. It looked to be more about planet viewing than constellations.

I think I've entered what's called "Dependency Hell." Here's what I get
when I try to install stellarium-0.8.1-1.i386.deb or whatever:
Unpacking stellarium (from stellarium_0.8.1-1_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of stellarium:
stellarium depends on libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6); however:
Version of libc6 on system is 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.
stellarium depends on libfreetype6 (>= 2.2); however:
Version of libfreetype6 on system is 2.1.10-1ubuntu2.2.
stellarium depends on libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.0); however:
Version of libgcc1 on system is 1:4.0.3-1ubuntu5.
stellarium depends on libsdl1.2debian (>= 1.2.10-1); however:
Version of libsdl1.2debian on system is 1.2.9-0.0ubuntu2.
stellarium depends on libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.0); however:
Version of libstdc++6 on system is 4.0.3-1ubuntu5.
stellarium depends on stellarium-data (= 0.8.1-1); however:
Package stellarium-data is not installed.
dpkg: error processing stellarium (--install):
dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
stellarium

I've been able to install version 0.7.0.1 using apt-get and have done it
many times. I figured 0.8.0.1 would install okay with dpkg. No dice. Any
help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer #13    Answered On: Dec 06

I got the same thing and this is what I going to do....Nothing, I am going to
wait for a couple weeks and install eft when it comes out. I hope that they
update stellarium a long with upteen amount of updates.

Answer #14    Answered On: Dec 06

That's where I'm at too. 0.7.0.1 works just fine and whatever changes
that may be in 8 aren't worth the time I'm expending trying to get it to
install. Curious minds want to know, though, and I'd just love to know
what's going on.
