I have googled this quite a bit but can not find an answer. Does
anybody out there know of a free autocad program that works with linux
as well as one of the automobile diag programs?

Must have been something wrong with Google, but I got this; it is called QCad
and has been around for a while. Please also look at:

A long, long time ago, I was the largest distributor of AutoCAD in the
country. Like I said, a long, long time ago.

I do not know to auto's but in your Synaptic has some programs.
Go to System>Admin>Synaptic and click on search and type in Autocad or
CAD. There is several programs in there. Try them out and see if that is what
you are looking for.

Try Qcad which I searched for in Synaptic. This looks like it will
load and let you modify dxf files.

In reply to myself (!) I tried loading dxf files I had saved from
Qcad into a free viewer in Windows-Unsusccesfully. I will ask some
of my Architect Colleagues about this.

In yet another reply to myself- I carried out further tests as follows:
I saved a dxf file that I knew to be ok as
1) dxf R12
2) dxf 2000
When i loaded these files onto Windows viewers by way of a test I found:-
The dxf r12 loaded into "Brava" and "Edrawings"
The dxf 2000 loaded into Brava but NOT Edrawings"
My conclusion would be that the R12 format would be a more common
medium of exchange. This is backed up by a quote from another website:
"Although Autodesk keep updating the format, release 12 is a basic
standard that all CAD programs should be able to read."

It made me laugh-if you are a Windows user you have to pay for
Qcad-Linux you don't. Score one for Linux.

There used to be a website called something like Whistle Blower (although I
couldn't find it with a quick search). It was free and all it needed was a
static IP address which it would ping regularly. If/ when the ping failed it
sent you an email.

I needed it to keep tabs on a baulky Netware Web Server that crashed almost
nightly but haven't used it for 12 years now. It may be gone but surely
someone must be providing a service like that.
