Handling an Iterator with no boundaries?

I'm trying to capture words as they are entered in a textArea. This
seems pretty straightforward using the Iterator except in the begining
when you have no word bounndries, just characters. I keep throwing
exceptions. Does anyone know an easy way to pick-off the first word
berfore you have word boundaries.
