What is fakeroot

An application called fakeroot is trying to install on my system through
Synaptic. Color me paranoid, but when an application with the name of
fakeroot and the below *description tries to install on my machine,
without me asking for it, I need to know a little more about it before
permitting it. What is this application?

With Linux on the rise, I'm just waiting for someone to find a way to
spoof an existing repository and send something malicious to everyone.
The update icon lights up and most will click on it without a second
thought.
