the "ls" command within ftp

We are trying to convert to Linux application servers within our SAP
environment. Some of the SAP programs execute ftp scripts. Our
problem is that from an AIX OS, the ftp "ls" command is interpreted
as it runs within the OS. However, the Linux ftp "ls" command is
interpreted as "ls -l". Does anyone know of a way to configure ftp
on Linux to interpret the ls command as an ls command from the OS?
